They are all over the musical map and they do it all very well. The best way to put it is Wilderspin will set your mind at ease, make you smile and give you a new found appreciation for good vocals, lyrics that touch your soul and some fine instrumentation to bring it all home.” See more here.

Today was a chance for people to walk along the new 330m stretch of canal at Capel Mill in Stroud – the canal has been carved out of a 1970s refuse tip and you can still see bits of plastic coming through the concrete pillars which keep it in place. The temporary dam, currently holds back a 1.5m wall of water, is due to be removed in the next week.

The project dubbed ‘the missing link’, links Bowbridge and Stroud and has been described as “one of the most challenging” on the canal. See more about the restoration process and how to get involved as a volunteer or member of the Cotswold Canal Trust at: www.cotswoldcanals.com

GLOUCESTERSHIRE SHOWCASE SHORT FILM FESTIVAL:

The first Gloucestershire Showcase Short Film Festival will be held on 1st June 2013 at Gloucester’s historic Blackfriars Priory and the Gloucester Language Immersion Centre. The Film Festival will give local filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their filmmaking talents. The festival will also include a screening of a selection of short films from around the world as selected by Strangers In A Cinema, demonstrations, workshops, live events, caricatures by Tony’s Toons, a Hog Roast and bar and the Showcase Market.

The first Gloucestershire Showcase Short Film Festival need Volunteers and local traders for our Showcase Market. Volunteers would help with setting up the venue, supervising events within the festival, handing out flyers and helping festival goers find events. As part of the festival they are putting on a Showcase Market which we hope will be made up of items made and sold by local crafts people as well as comic book and movie memorabilia sellers. They are still looking for vendors who may be interested in hiring a table for the afternoon. The market part of the festival will run from Midday to 4pm and will cost vendors a flat fee of just £10 per table for the afternoon.

More information on Gloucestershire Showcase and other upcoming events can be found at the links below; www.thisisshowcase.co.uk or www.facebook.com/thisisshowcase

This film is a glimpse at Siobhán Hapaska’s new work specially commissioned for Site Festival 2013: ‘the sky has to turn black before you can see the stars’. Presented by INDEX at the Goods Shed, Stroud, Gloucestershire GL5 3AP.

From the programme: “Vibrating uprooted olive trees are the central presence in Siobhán Hapaska’s newly commissioned installation. This powerful, evocative piece extends her interest in the co existence of extreme opposites, exploring themes of conflict and resolution, both domestic and political, which challenge our belief systems and our sense of the natural order of things. Juxtaposing the natural and synthetic, Hapaska’s meticulously crafted work presents a world on the edge of the abyss, but also on the edge of possibility.”

This film in no way does justice to the exhibition – it needs experiencing itself……Exhibition dates: 4th-12th May, Saturday 4th 10am-3pm, Sunday 5th, Monday 6th-Sunday 12th 11am-6pm.

See lots more about this piece and more at the INDEX Gallery at: http://indexgallery.wordpress.com/
With thanks to Helen Kincaid, co Director of INDEX Gallery, for permission to film this exhibition.
