Film clips of the Olympic Torch coming through Stroud with Torch bearers Daphne Edwards and Dennis Rigley. In Stroud and Painswick there were an estimated 20,000 people who came out to see it. While for many this was a great community day in Stroud and a celebration of sports we should note that there are those who view the Olympics with concerns.

The original budget of £2.4billion may now have risen ten times to £24billion, but there are also concerns regarding sponsors. See for example the Reclaim Shakespeare Company film highlighting concerns about BP (an official sponsor of the games): http://youtu.be/oMAImPJHqHk

Sponsors Dow Chemical and Rio Tinto are also among the companies protestors are targeting. Even the BMA has called for an end to Dow sponsorship because of links to the Bhopal gas disaster in India in 1984 when 25,000 people died. The BBC also printed 10 reasons why some dread the Olympics: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17525402

In Stroud there were several peaceful protests highlighting concerns, while Nailsworth blogger in a strongly worded piece argues we shouldn’t welcome the torch at all: http://kevsclimatecolumn.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/why-gloucestershire-should-no…
