Careers event for young people in district

Over 1,000 13-14 year olds will be attending a major interactive careers event in Stroud in the autumn. The event, called ‘Stroud Ambitions’ aims to enhance students’ awareness of the opportunities and types of employment their qualifications and abilities could lead to. They will have the opportunity to meet with employers from a wide range of business sectors, including retail, the public sector, engineering, banking and the armed forces.

The event, which takes place from 9am – 3pm on 6 November 2013 at Stratford Park Leisure Centre, is being organised by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, Stroud District Council and eight local secondary schools including The Shrubberies and Wycliffe College, with sponsorship from the University of Gloucestershire. Additionally, after the daytime event, a careers and higher education event will run from 4.30pm – 8pm  for anyone who wishes to attend. Universities, colleges and training providers will be on hand to provide advice.

Cllr Geoff Wheeler, leader of Stroud District Council, said: ‘This event has been organised to help meet the needs of young people and improve their prospects. It’s great to see already how so many local firms have agreed to be involved.’

Cindi Pride, deputy head teacher of Stroud High School, said:

‘We are delighted that our students are being offered such a unique, hands-on, opportunity to explore careers and future pathways at a point in their education when they are starting to focus on longer term ambitions and make some of their first independent decisions.’

Les Haines, chair of the Stroud Local Strategic Partnership, said: ‘Young people need the skills that employers demand. It is important for students to have as much information as possible to help them chose the career most suited to their talents. Businesses taking part will be able to demonstrate what they need from the employees of the future to take their companies forward.’

Notes for editors:

Stroud Ambitions’ follows the results of a budget consultation seminar held last year, when Stroud District Council wanted to seek the views of young people on a number of topics including the value of work experience, preparing for employment and careers advice. The participants wanted careers advice at an earlier age to help them decide their GCSE choices as these can determine the future interests and paths they take into higher education and employment. Endorsement of the event was made at a business and education meeting hosted by Stroud District Council, attended by 60 representatives from the education, business and voluntary sectors.
