This is the launch today of a programme of dementia friendly walks in Stratford Park in Stroud which will run for 12 weeks through June and July until mid- August on a weekly basis.

Update from Fairshares: “We are continuing the dementia friendly park walks in Stratford Park. We have been overwhelmed by the commitment of our volunteer walk leaders, who have decided together that they would like to continue the walks. The next two walks will be taking place on Friday 12th September and Friday 26th September, meeting at the Museum in the Park around 10.30am and leaving for the walk at 11am. We will need to decide the days and dates of future walks. More information from Emma on 01453 706555”.

Update 31/09/14: ‘We have arranged the following dates with the Museum in the Park so that a room in the museum will be available in case of bad weather. This means that on days when the weather may prevent an outside walk, some form of activity will take place at the museum, so please come along.  We will meet at 10.30am for coffee and tea, with the walk (or alternative activity) starting at 11am, the walks will be on Fridays on the following dates: October 3rd, October 17th, November 7th, November 21st.’

There are now 16 people trained as volunteer walk leaders. All have attended training put on by Dementia Adventure and the majority have also been first aid trained. There will be at least 4 volunteers at each session. They have planned the routes for the walks and are hoping to run two different walks each session. One will be much gentler and wheelchair friendly, whilst the other will be aimed at those who can walk a bit further. The walks will last about an hour and afterwards we will gather together for refreshments and a chance to chat.

The team write: “The idea behind these walks is to give people a chance to get out into nature and enjoy the sensory experience that being in the great outdoors brings. We will encourage people to smell the flowers and touch the bark of trees, watch the squirrels and try to spot the resident cat. People living with dementia will need to bring a carer with them as the volunteer walk leaders will not be carrying out a caring role. The walks will be free to all participants and coffees, teas, cakes and biscuits can be purchased at the museum. Participants will need to wear appropriate clothing and we would encourage people to bring a packed lunch so that we can sit down afterwards and enjoy each others company. All the walks will be on paths so walking boots will not be necessary. Although we are promoting these walks to people living with dementia, they are open to anyone who would enjoy a sensory walk in the park”.

The dates for the walks are as follows: 29th May, 3rd June, 12th June, 17th June, 26th June, 1st July, 10th July, 15th July, 24th July, 29th July, 7th August and 12th August. We would like people to arrive at 10am and will meet at the Museum in the Park, Stratford Park, Stroud. There is plenty of disabled parking at the Museum should you need it.

To book on to any of the walks you can call Emma on 01453 706555 or email We would like any organisations who are bringing groups to book in advance, but we are happy for individuals to turn up on the day.
